Halloween Lesson Plan – In The Room Where You Sleep

I’m posting this Halloween lesson before I’ve actually done it in case anyone else might find it useful.  It’s a lesson involving a song and some drawing for my two classes of 10-11 year olds.  I’ll comment on it  after I’ve done it and hopefully have a video to show for it too!

First, I’ll use flashcards to elicit or teach halloween words like ghost, mummy, skeleton, spider, shadow, werewolf, cat, monster. When drilling, we’ll use four faces – one happy, one sad, one angry, and one scared to make practising saying the words a bit more interesting. I’ll elicit the emotions to get scared/frightened, and then tell them I’m scared/frightened of spiders.

From there, I’ll ask the students if they’re frightened of ghosts, etc, and then get them to ask each other what they’re scared of.

When getting feedback, I’ll ask if anyone is scared of monsters, and then ask what they would do if there was a monster on their bed.  I’ll use this situation to teach you’d better and elicit run and hide.  I’ll also check they know sleep, touch, saw (as in past simple of see), and corner.

Next, I’ll give students a gapfill of lyrics to In The Room Where You Sleep by Dead Man’s Bones. There will be picture clues for them to guess the missing words before listening to the song to check.

After checking the answers and asking the students if they like the song. I’ll ask if they’d like to watch the video. Hopefully they’ll say yes, at which point I can say that there isn’t one and that we’re going to make one.  I’ll give each student a line from the song and ask them to draw a picture to illustrate it.

Before their next lesson, my plan is to photograph all of the pictures and make a video or if my technological abilities fail me, to click through the pictures as we listen to the song.
